After working as a dedicated pediatrician in insurance-based system for a decade, I found myself yearning for a change. The system, driven by productivity and a high patient volume, left little room for the meaningful doctor-patient relationships I deeply valued. Determined to make a difference, I embarked on a journey that led me to establish Sunshine Pediatrics, a direct primary care (DPC) clinic dedicated to providing exceptional care and forging lasting connections.
The frustrations of traditional system :
Within the traditional healthcare system, pediatricians encounter a range of challenges that impede their ability to deliver optimal care. Limited appointment time, resulting from packed schedules, compromises the quality and depth of interactions with patients. Furthermore, the burden of excessive paperwork, including documentation and insurance-related tasks, consumes valuable time that could be better spent on direct patient care. These obstacles contribute to physician burnout and strain the crucial doctor-patient relationship, ultimately hindering the provision of personalized and comprehensive care.
The Epiphany: Discovering Direct Primary Care (DPC):
The Covid-19 pandemic deepened my longing for increased patient and parent contact time, particularly considering the emerging mental health crisis among children and teenagers. Every time I saw teenagers with mental health issues or children with unique medical needs, I often wished I had more time with them and their families to address every concern comprehensively. The answer came to me in the form of Direct Primary Care (DPC) model clinic. Attending the Pediatric Mastermind DPC conference and witnessing the contentment of like-minded pediatric colleagues ignited a spark within me to embrace the DPC model of pediatric practice The key aspects of DPC that resonated with me were affordable pricing, extended visit times, increased accessibility, and a focus on personalized care and the doctor-patient relationship. It aligned with my core values of providing high-quality, holistic patient-centered care.
